Programs and Services

LASEC and its schools offer the following educational programs for students with disabilities:

Pre-School Screening

Children are individually evaluated in the areas of readiness, speech and language, gross and fine motor, as well as social development.  Each child also receives a vision and hearing screening.  The purpose of the preschool screening is to identify areas which could potentially interfere with a child’s success in school.  If results indicate the need for a more extensive evaluation, the school district will contact the parents.

Behavior Intervention Program

Designed for students with emotional disabilities, this program provides students a high degree of classroom structure and support in order to help them address the behavioral challenges that interfere with their academic progress.

CCORE - Cross Categorical Curriculum Offering a Reality-Based Education

The CCORE Program offers students with mental impairments, severe learning disabilities and other development disabilities a hands-on functional academic curriculum that instructs students in multiple environments giving them real life experiences. CCORE stands for Cross-categorical Curriculum Offering a Reality-based Education.

The L.I.F.E. I curriculum is designed for students aged 15-18 with emphasis on learning life skills within the community. Speech/language therapy and social work services are integrated throughout the program, which includes life skill academics and pre-vocational training. L.I.F.E. stands for Learning Independence for Future Endeavors.

The L.I.F.E. II curriculum is designed for students aged 18-21 with emphasis on utilizing community resources and vocational training. Families are assisted in connecting with agencies to aide in post-graduate transition needs.

Communication Disorders

The Language Learning Program (LLP) serves students in grades first through third within LASEC. Students identified for the Language Learning Program have average or above average cognitive ability; however, they exhibit significant language deficits that cannot be met in a less restrictive setting. Speech therapy services are integrated into the classroom curriculum to target communication deficits as well as academic delays.

Early Childhood

The Early Childhood Program provides exciting instructional activities and adventures that allow young children to learn and grow.  Children from ages three to six are provided either a morning or afternoon instructional program and related services including social work, speech and language, occupational or physical therapy as described in the student’s Individualized Educational Program. The Early Childhood Program is housed at both the East Early Childhood Center and North School in Franklin Park.

Vocational Adjustment Counselor

The Secondary Transitional Program at Leyden High Schools, Ridgewood High School, Elmwood Park High School and Maple Park Academy provides students supervision and practice in mastering the vocational skills that every individual needs to succeed in today's job market. Students are also taught personal living, community access, social, recreational and personal management skills. The goal of the program is to help every student become as independent as possible, despite his or her disability.
